What is Gut-Led Psychotherapy™, Jen?

Gut-led psychotherapy™ describes the way that I relate to you: grounded, in my body, feeling with you, and using this with my psychotherapy training to guide our work.

Gut-led psychotherapy™ also describes my therapy approach. I will invite you to connect with your own body, notice its signals, tune into the wisdom of your nervous system - much of which is physically located around your gut! When we make a good choice for ourselves, it somehow 'feels right' in our gut. And when we don't, we get a discomfort, twisting, or even maybe 'heaving' feeling; it doesn't feel good. And we will notice and get curious about the in-between - the anxious or excited butterfly feelings, and the rest of the body symptoms that arise when we experience different emotions.

So, gut-led psychotherapy™ comes with a heavy dose of mindful awareness, starting with my own personal practice and imparting this implicitly through the quality of my way of guiding therapy and explicitly through developing mindfulness skills, as needed and agreed with you.

Gut-led psychotherapy™ also means thinking about gut health! That includes the nervous system around our gut, the physical gut lining, and our gut microbiome, i.e., the community of beasties that live in our digestive tract. Are we getting the most helpful 'gut feelings' if our gut itself is unhappy? Lots of things influence our gut health including nutrition but also sleep, exercise and our mental health. So, gut-led psychotherapy means bringing these factors into the picture, maybe even front and centre if appropriate, to support you mind and body to be on the same page and working together. When this happens, we may stop floundering and start flourishing!
